Permanent Waves (Perm) Aftercare: First 48‑Hour Do's and Don'ts (perm aftercare)
By Ennabis Dominican Hair Salon | October 6, 2026
I’m big on protecting hair health, the same way my team uses heat protectant and keeps you comfortable step-by-step for services like a silk press. With a perm, the number one rule is simple: don’t wash, tie, or apply heat for the first 48 hours. That waiting period is what helps your curl pattern set so your waves don’t relax too soon, especially in Orlando where humidity and surprise afternoon storms can show up out of nowhere.
The first 48 hours: the do’s and don’ts that keep your perm from loosening
These first two days are where most “my perm didn’t take” stories start. I’m going to keep this practical. If I told you something different in the chair, follow that. If you’re unsure, call and I’ll talk it through with you.
Non-negotiables for perm aftercare: No shampooing, no conditioner rinse, no co-wash, and no “quick water rinse” for at least 48 hours. And skip heat tools completely.
Do this right away
- Keep your hair down and loose. If you need it off your face, use a very loose clip that doesn’t dent the curl at the roots.
- Finger-style your curls only. If you have to detangle, use a wide-tooth comb gently, starting at the ends.
- If you get caught in a sudden Orlando rainstorm, blot with a soft towel or T-shirt. Don’t rub. Let it air-dry.
Avoid these common slip-ups
- Tight ponytails, buns, headbands, wrap styles, or helmets that compress the curl pattern.
- Flat ironing, blow drying with high heat, or diffusing “just a little.” Heat too soon can relax your waves.
- Heavy sweating if you can help it. Sweat and moisture are a real factor in the first 48 hours.
Days 3 to 7: how to keep definition in Orlando humidity (and sweaty commutes)
Once you’re past the 48-hour mark, you’ve got more flexibility, but you still want to treat your curls like they’re “new.” Orlando humidity, especially around the North Goldenrod and Azalea Park corridor, tends to puff up hair fast and soften a fresh curl pattern if you’re rough with it.
Washing the first time
On your first wash, be gentle. Use lukewarm water, a sulfate-free shampoo, and a moisturizing conditioner. Don’t pile your hair on top of your head and scrub like you’re washing a hoodie. Keep your hands moving downward, and let the water do most of the work. This is the same “protect the hair” mindset my team uses when we’re doing heat services carefully on different curl patterns, including type 3b/3c hair.
Two weeks of smart restrictions
I know it’s tempting to slick your hair back right away. Try not to. For about two weeks, avoid tight ponytails, tight buns, and consistent heat styling. Those are the fastest ways I see curls flatten at the root and loosen early.
Quick commuter tip: If you’re heading out early from Azalea Park or North Goldenrod and you don’t want your curls smashed in the car, keep a loose silk scarf in your bag. Wrap lightly at the hairline or crown, not tight like a headband.
If you’re dealing with frizz from a sudden storm, don’t chase it with heat. Lightly dampen your hands, smooth the surface, and let curls re-set as they dry. Less touching usually wins.
Perm care products that actually help (without weighing waves down)
I’m not going to throw a 12-step routine at you. The goal is moisture, slip, and gentle hold, so your permanent waves look defined instead of fluffy.
- Shampoo: sulfate-free, moisturizing. If it leaves your hair squeaky, it’s usually too harsh for a fresh perm.
- Conditioner: moisturizing with good slip, so you’re not tugging at curls while detangling.
- Weekly deep conditioning mask: once a week is a solid baseline for most perm clients, especially if your hair was dry before the service.
- Styling: a lightweight curl cream or mousse tends to play nicer with waves than heavy oils. Start small. You can always add a little more.
- Sleep protection: silk or satin pillowcase, or a loose silk scarf. Your curls will thank you in the morning.
If you found me searching “hair salon near me” and you’re also doing color like highlights or balayage, keep your products gentle. Strong clarifiers and frequent hot tools are where I see curls and color both fade faster.
Swimming, gym days, and Orlando storms: real-life perm aftercare fixes
Life doesn’t pause because you got a perm. Here’s how I want you thinking about the biggest “real world” threats to your curl pattern in northeast Orlando, including College Park and Winter Park areas.
Gym and sweating
I generally recommend skipping heavy workouts for the first 48 hours. After that, use a sweat-wicking scarf at the hairline and keep your hair as loose as possible. If your scalp gets sweaty, let it fully dry before you re-style.
Rain and humidity
Humidity won’t “ruin” a perm, but it can swell the hair and make curls look frizzy. Keep a small anti-frizz serum in your bag and smooth lightly over the surface. Don’t rake through your curls.
Pool and ocean
Chlorine and salt can dry out curls fast. If you swim, I suggest waiting until after the first 48 hours. Wet hair with clean water first, then swim, then rinse and condition right after. That rinse-and-condition step matters.

If something feels “off, ” reach out fast. I’ll help you troubleshoot.
A fresh perm can feel different than your natural texture. Some frizz on day one is common, and curls often “settle” after that first gentle wash. But if you’re seeing extreme dryness, breakage, or curls dropping out right away, don’t wait two weeks and hope it fixes itself. Call me and I’ll look at what you did in the first 48 hours and what products touched your hair.
